Rate hikes are back in view as Australian monthly inflation topped estimates. Inflation accelerated to its highest rate in six months in May, as annual headline CPI jumped to 4.0% from 3.6% in April, while trimmed mean inflation also accelerated to 4.4% from 4.1%. While the monthly CPI series is volatile, the figures reinforce the persistence of Australia’s inflation problem with headline inflation running at its fastest rate since November 2023.
